6:30-6:45--We knew the murals would take some time, so we didn't give them anything to do in Patrol Time and started Horseshoe early.

6:45-7:00--Horseshoe

7:00-7:50--We gave each Patrol a large piece of white paper. We told them to come up with a theme for their mural and to sketch it out on a small piece of paper to have an idea of what they were going to do. We also suggested that they could divide the paper into vertical sections for each girl to work on, and then if they wanted, we could cut the murals up at the end of the night for each girl to take home her own artwork. We also gave them craft supplies--foamies, pompoms--that they could glue on after they had coloured it to enhance their designs.

7:50-8:10--Set up Art Gallery. We had all of their art work from the two Art Production meetings: dream drawings, prints, sculptures and murals. We arranged the room to display all of their artwork, and gave them the option of grouping them by project or by artist and they chose by artist. (AP#7)

8:10-8:30--We invited the parents to come back early so they could all come in and see the beautiful artwork the girls had created. Then they all took their artwork home with them.

Meeting #25: Girls for a Safer Community

As Guiders, we are always about crests/patches in our unit. So when I saw the GGC was giving out free crests to units who completed the Girls for Safer Communities challenge, I was all over it. I put in a request for the crests, with a promise to do the challenge by May. The next thing to do was to find a Pathfinder who had done the training and was willing to lead the program.

None of our Pathfinders were interested, so I contacted our Area Training Advisor, and she found me a Pathfinder from another District who could help us out.

She was an fabulous leader and we were really impressed with her public speaking skills. She started off giving them large pieces of paper and markers, and had them draw maps of the area around our school.

Then they buddied up and got checksheets and we went on a walk in the neighbourhood around the school. We live in a rural suburb, so no sidewalks, no crosswalks, no bike lanes.

After the tour outside, we went back inside and the girls filled out report cards on the neighbourhood and had a discussion about what would make the community safer. I think the item they chose as their issue to talk about was the amount of litter that is around the neighbourhood. She is planning to send the report cards to our city councillor. (YiG4#1, YaO4#4)

For the last half hour, we updated their books on what we've done lately, and then we sang some songs, using the Resources some girls had brought in for their Canadian Guiding badge.

Hike #6: Sackville-Bedford Connector

We went on another 5 km hike. Though I suppose you could classify these hikes more as walks.

We had 7 girls on our hike. This path went along a river and the girls stopped a few times along the way to check it out.

This was a linear hike, so as Guiders, we arranged to have cars at either end, and we had the girls dropped off and picked up at different locations. While waiting for the parents, we talked to a gentleman who was fishing for baby eels out of the river that he sold and shipped to Japan, where they grew them for food. He showed us the eels and they were tiny and white and looked like worms. Yuck!

We have a couple of girls who have now completed their 30 km and we're on track for about 13 people (girls and Guiders) to complete the required kilometers and earn the challenge. Another hike coming up in a few weeks!

Residential Camp: CSI Challenge

This camp was a lot of fun, and took a bit of planning! We had two units combine for the camp, so we had 27 girls and 6 leaders. One leader loves being in the kitchen on her own, so the other 5 of us were free for programming.

We do Secret Buddies every Residential Camp. Everyone, including leaders, draw names and have to do nice things for their buddy all weekend. This can be doing her dishes without her knowing or making crafts for her. This year, we put up a piece of Bristol board and called it the Buddy Board. We had post-it notes and the girls could write something nice about their buddies and post it on the board. This was a great addition and worked really well.

Along with the CSI Challenge, we were able to help the girls earn two badges, if they didn't already have them. 

We had three suspects and gave them brief backstories for the girls:

Suspect 1 arrived early at camp to go for a run. She used cornstarch in her shoes to absorb odors. She has a white terrycloth towel/facecloth to wipe sweat from her face.

Suspect 2 arrived early at camp to help Quatermaster unload the groceries and get things ready in the kitchen. She used baking soda to make some muffins, and a cotton tea towel to wipe her hands.

Suspect 3 arrived early at camp. She is very safety conscious and was worried about ice in the driveway and so spread salt out before everyone arrived so no one would slip. She used a white flannel rag to wipe her hands when she was done.

Quartermaster had set up the table to have snacks when everyone arrived. Everyone was busy doing her assigned task and didn’t see anything suspicious happening. (Alternately, the suspects could all point the finger at someone.)

FRIDAY

6:00-7:00 The Leaders arrived early to get the crime scene set up.

Crime Scene:

• 2 Cookies—1 Fully bitten, 1 with dental impression (we used Girl Guide mint cookies)
• Empty glass of milk with a fingerprint on it
• White powder (we used baking soda)
• Footprint on the floor (we had a piece of paper with a muddy bootprint on it, and a piece of plasticine that had also been stepped on)
• Ransom note
• Fiber from towel/napkin/facecloth and hair from suspect
• Yellow Caution tape

Besides the crime scene, we also posted optical illusions around the room for the girls to look at throughout the weeknd. (BW#5) (Optical Illusions, Word doc)

7:00-7:30—Arrival

7:30-8:00—Orientation/Introduction—Discuss fire drill, camp rules, Leaders & First Aider, Discuss the Challenge, Draw names for secret pals. For name tags, we took the girls pictures before camp, and made ID badges that hung around their necks with ribbons.

Ice Breaker game—Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar. We had two units, so they had to call a girl's name from the opposite unit. They were all standing, and after their name was called, they sat down, so we made sure that everyone's name was called.

WHO STOLE THE COOKIES FROM THE COOKIE JAR

Everyone: Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?

Leader: Cathy stole the cookies from the cookies jar!

Cathy: Who me?

Everyone: Yes you!

Cathy: Couldn't be!

Everyone: Then who?

Cathy: (names the next girl) stole the cookies from the cookie jar!

etc.

(can end it by the last person saying "Possibly" instead of "Who me?")

The girls sang this song all weekend.

8:00—Witness game—While the Ice Breaker game was going on, Wendy went back to the kitchen and got all gussied up. We asked Wendy to come out to pass out notebooks and pencils, which were going to go into their detective kits. The girls laughed at her, but we didn't tell them anything about what we were going to do. Once Wendy left, we gave 10-15 minutes to write down everything Wendy had on. (Observation Game 3.3)

Then we assembled detectives kits. We bought them each a case from the dollar store and had them decorate their name tags that we attached to the kits. We gave them plastic gloves, cotton swabs, small plastic bags, notepads, and pencils to put in them. We had included magnifying glass, tweezers, and measuring tape on the kit list. (Arts, Crafts, Drama 4.5)

9:00-10:00 Campfire and Mug up--Mystery snack--we put crackers and cheese in brown paper bags so they couldn’t see what was inside, and gave them juice boxes to go with it. We took it all outside to eat by the fire and then sing songs.

10:00-11:00: Get ready for bed

SATURDAY

7:00 Wake Up

8:00-9:30 Breakfast and Clean-up--Pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs, juice

We set the tables up for breakfast and then told them that those were there groups for the weekend. We called the groups Handwriting Analysis, Fingerprinting Unit, Lab Analysis, Hair & Fiber Unit, Footprinting.

For the morning, we set up five stations, with 30 minutes at each station. Each station taught the girls an aspect of forensics (Forensic Science Activities 5.0) and they each had a small hat craft (Arts, Crafts, Drama 4.4).

•  The magnifying glass was made from pre-shrunk shrinky-dinks, then the girls hot-glued a handle to it and glued a string around the handle. 
• The evidence bag had a piece of material, their fingerprint, a cotton swab, and some fake hair.
• The fingerprint powder was flour in a small container with a piece of paintbrush glued on top
• The clipboard was a piece of cardboard, small sticky notes, a toothpick coloured to look like a pencil, and a paper clip holding it all together.
• Mad scientist--fuzzy yarn on a pop tab with googly eyes (not shown)

THE STATIONS

Station 1. Handwriting and Ink Chromatography (Forensic Science Activities 5.1) (BW#1, C#4)

Station 2. Fingerprinting (Forensic Science Activities 5.2) and DNA (Forensic Science Activities 5.7): They did activity 5.2.2 for the fingerprints. (BW#6)

They also learned about DNA and made model DNA out of licorice and marshmallows. There is instructions for this, and I'll update the blog when I receive it from the Guider who ran this activity.

Station 3. Dental Impressions and Footprinting: They did 5.3.1 for the Dental Impressions, using foam plates.

For footprints, we used pans of water and they dipped their shoes in and then put them on brown paper. (Forensic Science Activities 5.6)

We also did their bare feet so they could see their arches in their footprints. (BW#7)

Station 4 Hair and Fiber Analysis: I think they did the 5.4 Basic Analysis for this.

Station 5 Unknown Powders and Liquids (Forensic Science Activity 5.5): This was my station so I can give more information. For the jars, I got glass spice jars from the dollar store. I got 8, so that there would be two sets for the girls to work with. I prepared the construction paper ahead of time with the powder names on it already (I used purple and red, not black). I labelled the jars using masking tape (though it did want to come off with the many rinsings).

I had one girl write down their observations with each experiment. They were in groups of five or six, so I had two sets of papers for them to observe. When they did the jars, one group did the iodine and one group did the vinegar. (C#2)

For unknown liquids, I made a pH indicator the night before camp. I chopped up purple cabbage and boiled it for 20-30 minutes. Then I drained off the liquid, which should be a dark purple and threw away the cabbage. I stored the cabbage juice in a glass jar for camp. After we did the powder, I put water in one jar, water and baking soda in one jar, and vinegar in the third. When you add the cabbage juice to water, it stays dark purple; to vinegar (an acid) it turns pink; to baking soda (a base) it turns blue/green.  The girls thought this was pretty cool! (C#5)

9:30-10:30 Rotate through 2 stations, 30 minutes each.

10:30-10:35 We took a 5 minute break to learn about heart rate. Everyone learned how to take her pulse, then we did 50 jumping jacks, and took our pulses again. It was a great break from sitting down. (BW#4)

10:35-11:05 One more station

11:05-11:30 Snack “Doughnuts and Coffee”--Mini Bagels & Hot Chocolate We had a number of spreads--cream cheese, peanut butter, cheeze whiz, margarine, jam, jelly

11:30-12:30—Rotate through 2 more stations

12:30-1:00—Clean up

1:00-2:00—Lunch & Clean-up Crescent Rolls & Hotdogs ( Body bag dogs), Stick and stones ( veggies & dip), drinks

2:00-2:10--We gave each group a secret message written in lemon juice. They could use either an iron or an iodine solution (10 drops of iodine in half a cup of water) to reveal the message that sent them outside. (C#3)

2:10-3:15 Outdoors Observation Game—We gave them a list of things to observe. (Observation Game, Word doc)

3:15-3:45—Word Search They came inside and did a Word Search (Puzzles 2.4). We took the puzzle and then put a message into the empty spaces. The supplies for their snacks were hidden in five different places around the building and each group had to figure out where their supplies were. They had some difficulties with the puzzle and if we were to do it again, we'd have to make it easier somehow.

4:00-4:30—Snack  Fondue—Girls will light their tealights with a match. Tea lights go under soup can, tin tart on top of can to melt chocolate chips, dip fruit in chocolate

4:30-5:30 Craft & Free Time: During their free time, if they wanted to complete the Bodyworks badge, they could come and see me and we would do 5 minutes talking about blood pressure. I have a blood pressure cuff that attaches to my iPhone to measure blood pressure. (BW#2)

5:30-6:00 Explaining & Picking Supper Choices: Supper was a Mystery Meal. The girls were given 25 items with made up names. They didn't know what the real things were. They had to choose 5 things for each of five courses, so that they had used everything on the list. 

This is where we got our sample menu: Mystery Dinner instructions. We replaced some things--Timbits instead of cupcakes, for example. The caretakers called us the day before camp to let us know that the deep freeze wasn't working, so we had to substitute Cool Whip for ice cream. We were going to have Smiles instead of baked potato, but we changed them to frozen roast potatoes.

We used paper plates, and disposable cups and utensils, to make things easier. The girls really enjoyed the whole thing, and were great sports about it. 

6:00-7:00 Mystery Supper

7:00-8:00—Analyze the Crime Scene—After supper, the girls used the skills they learned at Forensic School to solve the mystery. They each had a chance to take their evidence from the crime scene and to collect evidence from the suspects. Each group only concentrated on one of the aspects of the crime. 

Coincidentally, all three of our suspects had similar handwriting so they couldn't definitively figure it out from that, but the black markers we used were all different so they could easily determine it from that.

The Fingerprinting Unit had the most trouble. Fingerprinting is difficult to determine. So the girls interviewed each of us, to see if they could tell from our stories who the culprit was.

8:00-8:30—Determine the Culprit—Each group named the suspect and we arrested the criminal and found the cookies and everyone got to have a cookie.

8:30-10:00—Campfire and Banana Boats

SUNDAY

10:00-10:30--Guide’s Own Ending--the girls revealed their secret buddies, everyone told their Apples and Onion (two things they liked about camp and one thing they didn't), sang some songs (Buddies and Pals, Say Why Say When Say Where).

Cookies are here! We're having a District Cookie Blitz on Saturday, so we wanted to spend a meeting on cookie selling.

6:30-7:00: Patrol time-Life Plans We gave them forms to fill out for things they want to accomplish in their lives.  (YaO3#3 Worksheet (Word doc)) 

7:00-7:25: Horseshoe At Horseshoe, we got each girl to tell us one thing from their Life Plans. And then they handed their sheets in to get credit for doing the program work. (YaO3#3)

7:25-7:45: Make up skits on proper and improper selling etiquette. We divided them into groups of three and they had to do 2 short skits--one showing what not to do when cookie selling and one showing the proper way to sell. (DY2#3)

7:45-8:`5: Create a power point or poster to advertise Girl Guide Cookies. (YaO3#2)  Each leader brought a laptop for the girls to work on, plus we had two large pieces of Bristol board and a number of small pieces of poster board. We had the girls draw for if they would be working on the computer or with markers. We also downloaded clip art for the girls to use from the Girl Guides of Canada site. 

Once everyone was done, they all showed everyone what they had created. The posters looked fantastic and we will be using them at all the locations for the cookie blitz on Saturday. The girls who did the PowerPoints did a great job too. 

Meeting #22: Pottery Night

Another easy night! We brought in someone to teach the girls pottery. They each got a clump of clay about the size of their fist and learned to make pinch pots. They could shape them however they wanted, and as usual, I was blown away by their creativity. (DY2#6)

They also took a small piece of clay and made pendants that could be worn on a necklace. Then they used under-glaze to colour them. Our potter took all of their creations to fire in the kiln and we'll be getting them back in a few weeks.

Of course, I forgot to take pictures of the girls working. I will try to remember to take pictures of their creations when we get them back.

Our meeting was cancelled last week due to a snow day. We were supposed have done this last week and then do the second part this week. Unfortunately, with March Beak and cookies coming up, our next available week to complete this will be the first week in April! Stay tuned!

6:30-7:00:  Patrol time--Create a picture based on a dream using pastels. On their Patrol Time sheets, we told them what they were to do, and they had to come to the front to get their paper and pastels once they understood the instructions. We wanted to make sure they were reading and understanding their instructions! And one group didn't read all the way through and started drawing all six pictures on the back of their Patrol time sheet! (AP#1, YaO2#5)

7:00-7:15: Horseshoe

7:15-7:20: Song to learn Primary and Secondary colours. I wasn't at the meeting for this part so I don't know the exact lyrics, but it was sung to If You're Happy and You Know It, and went "Yellow and blue make green". As the leaders sang the song, they mixed paint and let the girls say what the colour was. (AP#3, DY2#4)

Edited to add: I found the lyrics to the song. It's from "Barney and Friends": Mix a Color lyrics.

7:25-7:45: We gave the girls small plates and they each got to create one colour from the paint (blue, yellow, red, white, black). (AP#3) Using this colour, they created a print using stamps and dry pasta. I got the dry pasta idea from this blog: E Is for Explore (AP#4, DY2#4)

7:45-8:15: Create a sculpture using clay. We gave them 6 different colours of clay/plasticine and popsicle sticks for shaping and let them be creative--and they came up with some great designs.  (AP#2)

We kept all of their creations because when we do the second half of this badge, we're going to have an art gallery for the parents to see all of their creations (AP#7). 

This was a great meeting. The girls got to complete a lot of program work, but they also got to sit at their tables and talk and create. I don't plan crafts enough (and I'm trying to work on that!), but I always love watching the girls create and interact.
